William Velez Speaks at Hunter College
The NSF-funded Mathematics and Science Partnership in New York City (MSPinNYC) is very pleased to announce a talk to be given by William Yslas Velez, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona, on February 14, 2008 at Hunter College.
Professor Velez began his efforts to increase the success rate and interest of minorities in mathematics in the late 1980’s. In the last four years he has doubled the number of mathematics majors at the University of Arizona and has also encouraged students to enroll in mathematics as a second major. He has agreed to share his strategies and approaches with mathematics and science faculty as well as others interested in the critical problem of attracting minorities to careers in mathematics and mathematics-related fields.
Please join us and share this e-mail with interested colleagues. Because space may be limited we ask you to respond to Lisa Ruscigno as soon as possible if you plan to attend. The talk will be followed by a reception.
