The MSPinNYC Research Group
Who We Are
Scientists, mathematicians, educators, educational researchers, psychologists, sociologists, policy theorists, students, faculty, filmmakers - the MSPinNYC Research Group is a dynamic collection of individuals drawn form all aspects of the educational arena working together to address long-standing issues in mathematics and science teaching and learning in New York City.
The Mission
The MSPinNYC Research Group is committed to improving math and science education for New York City’s youth through scholarship. The Group draws on the expertise of mathematicians, scientists, educators, educational researchers, psychologists, sociologists, and policy theorists who have many years of experience in the educational arena in the urban setting. The primary goal of the Research Group is to build effective collaborations among researchers from different disciplines and with expertise in different research methodologies leading to the creation and communication of new knowledge about teaching and learning.
Research Support
The MSPinNYC Research Group meets monthly to discuss members’ research efforts, to share research results, and to review research publications. Through these meetings shared interests are identified and collaborations are borne.
The MSPinNYC grant supports researcher efforts in four ways:
- an annual competition for time released from course work during the academic year
- a summer stipend to participate in research as a Summer Fellow
- direct funding of support staff, graduate students, and other researchers
- travel funds to present research results
Applications for the annual released time competition and for the Summer Fellowships are available in March of each year. The 2007 applications will be posted in March 2007.
Education Journals
Compiled below is a list of journals that members might find useful as a potential venue for publication.
Bibliography
This is by far not a comprehensive bibliography listing. Rather it is some of the key publications we have used in the MSPinNYC project. We tried to identify two key publications per topic for inclusion in the bibliography. In addition, review articles or meta analyses are also included.
Meeting Schedule
Next Meeting: TBA
Video Data
Over 600 hours of video data were collected in the MSPinNYC summer school in 2006. The data has been cataloged and archived by the three editors, Gautum Kansara, Ximena Diaz, and Graciela Fuentes. DVDs have been created around particular topics. Members can ask for copies of existing DVDs. A list of DVD topics will be posted here soon. Members can also speak with the editors or send email to request the construction of a particular DVD or theme from the summer data.
